Performing at Soundskool Events
A guide for students and parents
Students and parents should be aware of the minimum standards set at Soundskool for appearing at school events. Please make sure to read the indications inside this article.
Soundskool hosts many types of events:
Mini Concerts
Masterclasses
Competitions
Special Performances.
What is the purpose of these events?
- An opportunity for students to perform in public
- Motivate students and teachers to work towards a goal
- Teach the basics of public performance and behavior
- Build excitement and a sense of pride in our students
- Hear other students, and meet other parents
How can students participate?
- Teachers will select students to perform when they are ready.
- If parents are keen for their children to play, please speak to your teacher or school desk to let them know. However please note that the teacher has the final say.
- There is a maximum of 15 students per mini-concerts, and 3-4 students per masterclass. So, only students that are most proficient will be selected.
Minimum Performing Standards:
Students are expected to play their chosen piece(s) to a minimum standard.
- Solid sense of time and rhythm
- Fluency and continuity
- Rounded sound and phrasing
Student Minimum Attainment Standards:
Students Dress Code (for parents).
Students should dress appropriately for a performance, as this will likely be filmed and photographed.
Whilst sitting in the audience (for parents)
- Students are expected to be seated, without running around, or shouting.
- They should join in clapping after each others’ performances.
Walking on/off, and Bowing:
- Students are expected to display strong stage manners from the moment of walking on/off, bowing before/after.
- They should state their name, and the piece they are performing in a clear voice where possible.
Posture:
On piano (see photos):
- Feet support (use feet support also in class)
- Curved hands (no flat fingers, collapsed hand positions)
- Straight back (no slouching, or curved back)
On drums:
- Straight back (no slouching, or curved back)
- Correct drum grip (firm fingers and well positioned on the stick)
- Both feet on their respective pedals
On guitar/ukulele/bass:
- Sit tall with good back support, arms relaxed.
- Feet flat/footrest for stability
- Minimize fretboard glances
On vocals:
- Avoid sticking out the chin or tilting head
- Straight back and relaxed shoulders for breath support
- Feet are shoulder-width apart for stability
On violin:
- Relaxed grip and elbow tucked in slightly
- Hold violin comfortably against the body
- Stand tall with good back support
