April Monthly Classical Concert: Vienna Mélange

April Monthly Classical Concert: Vienna Mélange

April’s Monthly Classical Concert transports audiences to fin-de-siècle Vienna — a city where profound emotion, artistic experimentation, and decadent charm converged.

This recital traces a musical and emotional journey through the late Romantic and early modern eras. It begins with the introspective songs of Gustav Mahler, whose music reveals vulnerability, longing, and existential depth. It continues with the lush and sensuous Lieder of Alexander von Zemlinsky, rich in harmony and emotional nuance.

The program culminates in the sparkling wit and elegance of Viennese operetta — the genre that captured Vienna’s spirit of humor, nostalgia, and sophistication. Light in appearance yet refined in craft, operetta offered audiences beauty and escape during a period of cultural transformation.

This wonderful performance features Japanese soprano Maki Yoshizawa, with piano accompaniment and intermezzi by Yi-Chih Lu, offering an evening of refinement, contrast, and expressive storytelling.
